Companies predict rising demand for composites in the aviation and aerospace industry

COMPOSITES EUROPE: 22 Jul 2011 - Carbon fibre technology has become a key technology for the construction of aircraft and aerospace vehicles. This is evident at the international trade fair COMPOSITES EUROPE, that will take place from 27 to 29 September 2011 in Stuttgart. Renowned leaders in technology, such as the SGL Group, MAG or Airtech confirm that the trade fair has become a rendezvous point for the major names in the composites industry. Innovations for the aviation and aerospace industry provide a major aspect of the trade fair activities.
Just a few weeks ago, the SGL Group -The Carbon Company, notched up a further milestone where research into further carbon fibre applications for aviation and aerospace is concerned. On 27 May 2011, the company opened a state-of-the-art pilot plant at the site for central corporate research in Meitingen. The facility costing eleven million euros is the core feature of the "AirCarbon" project, sponsored by the German Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi), under which industrial partners under the overall control of the SGL Group are forging ahead with specific CFP innovations for the aerospace industry for the first time in Europe. The importance being given to the aerospace sector was emphasized in the statement made by Dr Gerd Wingefeld, who represents technology and innovations on the Board of Management of the SGL Group. He announced that "on this, the most modern CFP pilot plant worldwide, we are developing the next generation of high performance carbon fibres".
